I recently became absorbed by the Bosch painting, The Temptation of St. Anthony, and its plethora of unanswered questions. Who was this man? What is this painting about? Was it commissioned? By whom? Where was the altarpiece placed? How did it end up in Portugal?
I embarked on a journey to find the answers, and to give some semblance of order to the information accumulating in my computer decided to initiate my own thesis study: Art and Ergotism. Being a subject that might be considered somewhat morbid, it was not a subject I’d picked from the air but rather one to which I was led.
